What a massage chair does for each part of the body

A massage chair is not one massage for the whole body – each body area is worked by a different mechanism. Massage arms knead the back and neck, airbags squeeze the arms and calves, rollers work the feet, and heat and stretching relax the lower back. So first decide where you feel the most tension, then choose a chair whose strongest function covers that area.
In short: which function for which body part

| Upper and middle back | Long SL track, 3D/4D mechanism, body scan | Brillactiq A665, Maesthron A801 |
| Lower back | Heating, stretching, Zero Gravity position | Supearl Open+ A336-31, Delightry A553 |
| Glutes and hips | SL track continuing under the seat, hip airbags | Chillin Open A360-31, Ixpirio A362 |
| Arms and hands | Arm airbags, hand acupressure, forearm massage | Queentri A357, Maesthron A801 |
| Calves | Mechanical calf massage with rollers, extended leg massager | Grandease+ A550, Eagleton, Ixpirio A362 |
| Feet | Foot rollers and airbags | Queentri A357, Delightry A553, Ixpirio A362 |
Neck and shoulders
The neck and shoulders get tense most when we sit at a computer or look at a phone for a long time. They are massaged by the same arms that travel along the back, so what matters here is how deep they reach. A 2D mechanism moves only up–down and sideways, while 3D and 4D arms also push forward and press deeper – you feel this exactly at the shoulder muscles. A 4D mechanism also varies the rhythm, so the massage feels less mechanical.
Airbags squeeze the shoulders from the sides, and heating helps the muscles relax faster. A body scan before the massage finds the height of your shoulders so the arms do not start too high or too low.
What to choose: a 4D chair with shoulder airbags – Grandease+ A550 (30 airbags, voice control) or the 3D Delightry A553 (38 airbags). If you do not need a chair, there is also a separate D260C massage cushion for the neck and shoulders. More in our article on neck and shoulder tension.
Upper and middle back
The massage reaches the back best when the track runs along the whole spine. An SL track starts at the neck, follows the natural curve of the spine and continues under the seat – so it covers not only the area between the shoulder blades but also the lower back down to the glutes. On many iRest models the track is about 135 cm long.
Each back technique – kneading, shiatsu, tapping, stroking – works differently (see massage techniques in chairs). Chairs with health detection, such as Brillactiq A665 or Maesthron A801, pick a program themselves based on sensor data.
What to choose: at least an SL track; for a deeper massage, a 3D or 4D mechanism.
Lower back
The lower back usually hurts not because it lacks kneading, but because of long sitting and stiffness. Three things help most here:
- Heating – iRest chairs use graphene heating pads, and Maesthron also has jade heating. Heat relaxes the muscles before the massage.
- Stretching – the chair holds the legs and gently reclines the back, stretching the lower back. Stretching is available on Supearl Open+ A336-31 and Delightry A553.
- Zero Gravity position – the legs are raised above heart level and body weight is spread evenly, so the spine carries less load and the massage arms press deeper.
What to choose: a chair with heating and stretching.
Glutes and hips
This area is often forgotten, although after long sitting the glute muscles tighten and can pull on the lower back. They are reached only by chairs whose track continues under the seat (SL track) or that have hip airbags – for example QL A185.
What to choose: any chair with an SL track – from Chillin Open A360-31 (€1,570).
Arms and hands
The arms are massaged by airbags in the armrests: they inflate rhythmically and squeeze the forearms and hands. This suits people who work a lot at a computer or with their hands. Some models go further: Queentri A357 has hand acupressure, and Maesthron A801 has a forearm “Piano” massage in which several elements press the forearms in turn.
What to choose: a model with hand acupressure or forearm massage.
Calves
Calves get tired from a lot of walking or standing. The simplest chairs only squeeze them with airbags, while more advanced ones have mechanical rollers that knead the calves – much closer to a hand massage. Mechanical calf massage is found on Grandease+ A550 and Supearl+ A336, an extended calf massager on Ixpirio A362, and Eagleton has independent leg massagers.
What to choose: a chair with mechanical calf massage if you stand or walk a lot.
Feet
The feet are massaged by rollers at the bottom of the leg rest – they press the sole much like reflexology. Side airbags usually work at the same time. Most mid-range and premium iRest chairs have foot rollers: Queentri A357, Delightry A553, Ixpirio A362, Chillin+ A360, EasyQ A166, Supearl+ A336 and Enjoyfy A2805.
What to choose: a model with foot rollers – they are found on more affordable chairs too.
How a massage chair improves wellbeing
Regular massage at home mainly works on muscle tension and fatigue:
- Less tension after desk work – a 15–20 minute evening massage relaxes the neck, shoulders and lower back.
- Lighter legs – calf and foot massage in the Zero Gravity position with the legs raised.
- Relaxation and rest – warmth, rhythmic massage and a reclined position help you unwind; many people use the chair before sleep.
- Consistency – the massage is available every day, with no booking or travel.
A massage chair is not a medical device and does not treat illnesses. If you are pregnant, have a pacemaker, thrombosis or osteoporosis, or have recently had an injury or surgery, consult your doctor before use.
How to choose based on what matters most to you
- Most tension in the neck and shoulders – choose a 3D or 4D mechanism.
- Lower back pain – heating, stretching and Zero Gravity matter more than the number of programs.
- Tired legs – mechanical calf massage and foot rollers.
- You want everything – Grandease+ A550 or Brillactiq A665 massage every body area.
Compare all models by function in the comparison table, and the best way is to try them at the RELIVO showroom in Vilnius (Statybininkų g. 1C-105) – within a few minutes you will feel how each chair massages the area that matters most to you.
Frequently asked questions
Does a massage chair massage the neck?
Yes. The neck is massaged by the same arms as the back. 3D and 4D mechanisms reach it most deeply, and the body scan sets the right height.
Is a massage chair suitable for lower back pain?
Heating, stretching and the Zero Gravity position often help, as they relax the muscles and reduce load on the spine. If the pain is strong or long-lasting, consult a doctor first.
Which chairs massage the calves and feet?
Most iRest chairs from Chillin+ A360 upwards have foot rollers. Mechanical roller calf massage is on Grandease+ A550 and Supearl+ A336, and an extended calf massager on Ixpirio A362.
How long should you use a massage chair per day?
Usually 15–20 minutes of one program, once or twice a day, is enough. A longer massage is not necessarily better.
